For humanities majors out there: if anyone ever asks you, ‘What are you going to do with a major in … ?’ just use my standard response: ‘A major in classics is a fast track to a high-paying and rewarding career in project management.’

Wise words from my former Oberlin advisor, featured in this week’s The Source.

One of many highlights (also, the entire ‘What do you do in your spare time’ section is gold):

Q: What’s your favorite building on campus?
A: My favorite structure is the gateway in front of the art building commemorating the entrance of women into college education. It’s a beautiful gateway, but, like most things at Oberlin, needs to be read carefully. I’d think someone would have noticed when it was put in that the ’gateway‘ doesn’t lead to anything, not even a sidewalk. Just a patch of undefined grassy space. Is that a depressing metaphor? And within the gateway there’s an herb garden. What’s that about? Is that to remind those barrier-breaking young women about the virtues of cooking? I think the whole thing is loaded with subtle and contradictory messages, which makes it very Oberlinian.

KF alerted me to the existence of this—during senior week, we stole the Classics department’s bust of Homer and took it to different places on campus and photographed it. Afterwards, we made a photo album of it and gave it to our professors (who didn’t even notice Homer was gone, by the way).

They have since put it up on the home page of Oberlin College’s Classics department.

So I present to you, Homer’s Odyssey. Zoom

via fuckyeahoberlin (as much as I dislike this ‘fuck yeah’ thing, I like this photo enough to let it pass). This is Charles Hall, also known as the guy who invented a cheap way of producing aluminium, and it’s also his fault Americans spell it ‘aluminum’.

I am missing Oberlin so much right now. But on the other hand, I just heard that there will be no more free chips with your sandwich at Decaf, so I’m glad I graduated on time. First they charge you upwards of 50 grand a year and they take away your chips? No thank you. Zoom

sucks.

Also, you get about five different colors of comments in the margins.
